Precision diagnostics meets ethics and data safety: How AI:D approaches the design of artificial intelligence tools for dental industry
AI tools need to be precise, safe and ethical. That's what we believe in, and that’s how we're designing our applications to be.
Safety above all
X-rays are sensitive medical information. We keep patient data anonymised, encrypted and stored only with informed consent – treating others the way we’d like to be treated ourselves.
We are making sure that patients and dentists are clear about what happens with their data, where it flows and for what purposes.
Precision
Diagnostics must be accurate and precise. We collect data from people of all demographics, with all kinds of oral health conditions, so that our AI learning algorithms can learn from the widest research sample possible.
Ethics & responsibility
AI is just a tool and it can only replicate what it has been taught. It lacks the ability to think for itself, but it is very good in repeating what we think – including our biases. To prevent AI from repeating our possible prejudiced behaviours and thought patterns, we take good care in examining our own thinking and only then – design the AI accordingly.
Some more things we care for
Inclusion
Education should be for everyone, not only those who can afford it. We’re striving to address the balance, improving access to education in places where it is often less easy.
Affordability
The full-fledged versions of our AI tools will be affordable for students and universities around the world.
The story, in brief
For the past 20 years, as dentists and dentistry entrepreneurs, we have been advocating the prevention philosophy of Dr. Jiří Sedelmayer. Our focus has been on educating dentists, dental students, teachers and the general public on how to prioritise prevention over restoration.
Through our close interactions with students, we observed that many of them struggle with reading X-rays and, despite their motivation to learn, universities lack the resources to support their X-ray reading skills adequately.
To address this issue, we developed an AI-powered app that can provide instant and accurate feedback to students' findings. This tool is free and accessible from anywhere, making it a perfect learning solution for aspiring dental professionals – without direct supervision.
It was only later that we realised the potential of our technology for dental practices. As a result, we also developed X-ray diagnostic software that leverages AI technology for practicing dentists.

AI:Dental cares about ethics in dentistry
AI:Dental aims to be a responsible AI provider in the healthcare industry. Together with KInIT we analyse ethical and societal impacts of our system on stakeholders. We anonymise X-ray data to protect patient privacy while still allowing our app’s AI to use the user data for learning purposes.
